  • Corning says the first device to market with Gorilla Glass 6 will be an unnamed Oppo flagship.
  • Judging from Oppo’s Twitter account, it’s likely the unnamed device is the Oppo F9.
  • The Oppo F7 launched exclusively in India earlier this year. There is no Oppo F8.

Corning, Inc. – maker of the popular Corning Gorilla Glass series – said in a press release today that the first device to market with the latest Gorilla Glass 6 will be an unnamed Oppo flagship smartphone.

The next big smartphone release from Oppo is almost certainly the Oppo F9, which makes it the most likely contender for the Gorilla Glass launch.

According to Corning, the unnamed flagship from Oppo will land “in the coming weeks,” so whatever it is we won’t have to wait too long to find out.

Editor's Pick

Gorilla Glass 6 is the company’s most durable cover glass to date and can survive an average of 15 drops from one meter onto rough surfaces. According to Corning, consumers drop their smartphones seven times per year, on average. Theoretically then, Gorilla Glass 6 could survive over two years-worth of drops.

Other Oppo flagships like the Oppo Find X and the Oppo R15 use Gorilla Glass 5, so the company seems to be a natural fit for the launch of the new iteration of glass.

The Oppo F9 is the follow-up to the Oppo F7 which launched exclusively in India earlier this year (there is no Oppo F8). Oppo has been teasing the F9 launch on its Twitter account over the past few days, focusing mainly on (what else?) its display.

According to the tweeted images, the Oppo F9 will feature a very small notch that looks remarkably similar to the notch on the Essential Phone, which was the first phone to market with the controversial design element.
